Urban Mining In Your Home

I found an interesting article entitled
Below is an excerpt that I found interesting, might have to look into how to reclaim Cobalt :-)

From one tonne of mobile phone batteries, Umicore claims it can extract between 135-240kg of cobalt, depending on the generation of phone – modern smartphones have more. They say they can also reclaim 70kg of copper and 15kg of lithium from the same handsets. Even once the battery has been removed, the electronics inside a phone can surrender around 1kg of silver and 235g of gold per tonne of devices. This compares very favourably to primary mining, which only averages 100g of silver in each tonne of mined ore, and 2-5g of gold per tonne of ore.

The Green Side of Metal

An interesting article has been published by greenlivingsavings.com giving 6 reasons scrap metal is a good green business.

Extract....

Reusing and recycling items has become ingrained in a society concerned about fulfilling its environmental responsibility. The industry of metal processing and fabrication is no different. In fact, a large percentage of metal products manufactured for industrial and commercial use come from recycled sources. Products like auto parts, building materials and even jewelry generally use recycled metal. This is an already huge industry and in continually on the incline. Knowing and understanding the right avenues to pursue can be beneficially for all young green businesses.

Here are the six main steps that metal processors use to transform unsightly scrap metal into valuable raw materials.

Nice to see something positive being published about scrap metal for a change :-)

Gold Recovery: How to recover gold from ink cartridges

Another excellent video from "Moose Scrapper" on how to recover gold from ink cartridges.

Some ribbons have adhesive on one side and will not work in this reaction. You may have to incinerate them with your IC's and flat packs. Very easy process with HCL ( Muriatic acid) and bleach to make Auric chloride.

Gold finger boards..

An excellent Video created by  Moose Scrapper - some great tips..

Muriatic acid is one of the names for hydrochloric acid. It is also known as spirits of salt or acidum salis. "Muriatic" means "pertaining to brine or salt". The chemical formula for muriatic acid is HCl.

I want to try the tip of using stainless steel to extract the copper from solution :-)

Scrap Girl

Learning to forgive is much more useful than merely picking up a stone and throwing it at the object of one's anger, the more so when the provocation is extreme. For it is under the greatest adversity that there exists the greatest potential for doing good, both for oneself and others

More reasons to recover precious metals

Some more Interesting thoughts about
Precious Metals and the worth of recovering.

Precious metals ensure that you have a form of wealth not subject
to devaluing, and their intrinsic worth will continue to be debated
– probably for centuries – but, like it or not,
based upon 5,000 years of history, gold is money.

It is considered as a fortunate day in mythology of hinduism and
people make purchases of gold and other precious metals
especially at this day.

You can flat out denounce it, but there will
always be somebody happy to take your gold and silver off you
at whatever market price you may deem ridiculous.

Precious metals are a safe haven asset and you should have
5% to 10% of your portfolio in metals.
Gold would be easier to take with you and silver would be
easier to use for barter, so get both.  In turn, some institutional
investors transferred positions in precious metals to stocks.

So what is bullion?

Bullion refers to any precious metal in a form in which its
primary value comes from the worth of the metal, not from
an artificial currency value. Bullion is most often traded
in the form of coins minted by governments, or in bulk ingots.

The value of bullion is affected by three factors: metal, weight and purity.

The metal the bullion consists of is obviously important in
determining its overall value:
gold is worth more than silver, while platinum is worth more than gold.

The weight of bullion is usually measured in troy ounces, where :

one troy ounce is equal to approximately 31g.

Purity also varies widely in bullion, though many countries
release coins with 99.99% purity, which is as close as one
can practically get to pure.
