Plasma technology retrieves precious metals from e-waste

Plasma technology retrieves precious metals from e-waste: Tetronics International is aiming to address the growing issue of electronic waste by using plasma to recover precious metals from the debris.

Plasma technology retrieves precious metals from e-waste

Tetronics’ clean plasma technology turns old electronic devices into
value by extracting precious metals such as gold, silver, copper and tin
whilst eliminating the hazardous materials.

The heat and ultraviolet light properties of plasma, an ionised or
electrically charged gas, are designed to smelt and separate precious
metals in a furnace, whilst destroying any harmful elements. A
non-hazardous vitrified material is left behind, which the company calls
Plasmarok and which can be used as a building material for the
construction industry.

Very interesting technology,

Gold prices likely to rise by year-end: analysts - Economy

Maybe time to start thinking of early Christmas presents?

Representatives of gold trading companies said this was the best time to buy gold.

Global
gold prices have been falling for months especially with the relentless
appreciation of the US dollar. Gold and the greenback traditionally
have an inverse correlation.

However,
the recent economic and political instability around the world could
put paid to this, and the precious metal could resume its role as a safe
haven, which would cause its price to rise strongly, the
representatives said.

New Way to target

I'd love to know what chemicals they are using...

Researchers at the University of Edinburgh are developing a new compound to extract gold from used electronics. Around 7% of the world’s gold is inside e-scrap, of which less than one-third is currently salvaged, according to project leader Professor Jason Love.

One tonne of gold ore contains around up to 5 grams of pure gold. However, a tonne of discarded mobile phones easily holds 300 grams of the valuable metal, Love says. The chemical reagent pioneered by in Edinburgh effectively recovers ‘a very high purity of gold’ from various types of discarded electronics.

First, the researchers place the printed circuit boards in a mild acid to dissolve metallic parts. An oily liquid containing the new reagent is then added, which allows gold to be extracted selectively from the complex mixture of metals found inside electronics.

Any ideas for this please comment  - have a great day :-)

Urban Mining: Hidden Riches in our Suburbs.

Cities hold tons of materials that can be reused — and doing so can address over-exploitation of scarce natural resources. From buildings to electronic waste, we are surrounded by value. So how does urban mining work?

With demand of natural resources increasing and supply decreasing, the use of recycled materials is gaining importance.

Mineral resources like , bricks or ceramics can be found in large quantities in many buildings across countries like Germany. Metals such as steel, copper, and aluminum, and materials like plastic, gypsum, asphalt and wood are also abundant. Household waste is also a major source of valuable materials
.
Urban mining has many advantages over the materials are already in the city where they are likely to be needed again, so there is no need for long transport routes. And the environmental impact, particularly in land use, is clearly lower than mining for natural resources.

Just about everything can be reused

Buildings, furniture, electrical appliances and old radiators are just as much part of industrial society's "anthropogenic deposits" as disused railways, industrial wastelands, underground cables or that  forgotten in the depths of your drawer.

These so-called secondary raw materials can be reused for commercial and industrial production, thus limiting imports from abroad, protecting natural resources and the environment.

For recycling experts, a simple car represents a large manmade stock of raw materials; even a rusty old car has value. The Internet is full of retailers looking for gears, doors and other replacement parts. The iron, plastic, glass and metal can all be sold to make new products. Tires can be processed into road surfaces or insulating material.

In Summary, there is A FORTUNE to be made in waste :-)

I've got some Metal recycling suggestions and tips listed at Life is an Adventure if you're interested :-) Might get some ideas flowing :-)
