Reasons why "Urban Mining" rocks.

What is Urban Mining?

The electronics industry is now competitive with both the religious world and the jeweler for gold. It takes only forty cell phones to use up one gram of the stuff. But, it takes a ton of mined ore to produce that gram.

“Urban mining” is the picking of valuable minerals and metals out of discarded electronics. Though recycling is only beginning to catch on in many places, a metric ton of recycled laptop circuit boards can yield 40 to 800 times as much gold as the ore.


    For every 1 million cell phones that are recycled, the following amounts of precious metals can be recovered:

    16,000 kg of copper

    350 kg of silver

    34 kg of gold

    15 kg of palladium

Currently, we use heat to burn out the metals, or chemicals to leach out the metals, both are effective but toxic.  A company in America has developed a method using water with some additives, and electrolysis to separate valuable metals.  It will be interesting if this process becomes public, urban miming might just take off... :-)

Hello Ian, Below is your MetalMiner Monthly Metals Index for December 2019. Some highlights (and low lights) include: It was another mixed month for the Monthly Metals Indexes (MMIs). Like last month, only three MMIs showed upward movement this month (Aluminum, Construction and Raw Steels) U.S. steel prices have been on the rise in recent weeks, pushing back from what appeared to be a bottoming out over the course of a month from mid-October. U.S. HRC, HDG and CRC prices have all posted significant gains; however, as is often the case, plate prices bucked the trend Meanwhile, although the Aluminum MMI gained one point this month, it still remained near its three-year low. As MetalMiner's Belinda Fuller explained, aluminum prices trended sideways in November, impacted by slowing growth rates and demand uncertainty heading into 2020 The Copper MMI trended flat this month, but Fuller noted China's demand could rebound in 2020 based on positive PMI readings in November. Miner Rio Tinto also announced a $1.5 billion investment to extend the life of its Kennecott copper site in the U.S. through 2032 In the construction sector, U.S. construction spending in October jumped 1.1% on a year-over-year basis. In addition, the Architecture Billings Index posted a reading of 52.0 for October (up from 49.7 in September), marking a return to billings growth after a year mostly spent in flat to downward territory November proved to be a solid month for U.S. auto sales, with Honda and Toyota posting healthy sales increases. Ford unveiled its new all-electric Mustang Mach-E SUV, while Tesla showed off its Cybertruck, as competition in the electric vehicle sector continues to build In trade news, the WTO's Appellate Body is paralyzed, as it is unable to fill recently vacated positions due to the U.S.'s blocking of new appointments. There are two dominant approaches to recycling today’s used electronics – one is de-manufacturing, which is manually dismantling the electronics in order to utilize the raw materials that are found for recycling and the other is shredding, where the electronics are loaded into large shredders which helps to reduce manual sorting and separation of components.

“Metals have been recycled for thousands of years, but in the last 50 years or so, we’ve seen some interesting developments, particularly in fields using granulation methods to pull out more metals with less effort,” Gregory said.

Some newer methods, such as the ones used by Liquisort, will actually process these metals in a special bath.
