Scraps to sculpture: Third annual weld-off to be held at Helena High
Welding instructors Cindy Galbavy and Jim Weber developed the 
competition several years ago based on the television show “Junkyard 
Wars.” Students pick choice pieces from a trailer full of scrap metal 
donated by Pacific Steel & Recycling, then go to work welding any 
type of futuristic sculpture before each is judged by local welders and 
artists.
The sculptures must show signs of the four most common 
welds: gas metal arc welding, tungsten inert gas welding, arc welding 
and oxy acetylene welding.
What a great idea
